For an ideal Indian vacation in the open, amongst the wilds and the wilderness, the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary should be your stop. Located 107 kms from Jaipur, the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is in a wooden valley, surrounded by barren mountains. The dry deciduous forests of the ancient Aravalli range cover the area of the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve. This park was declared as a sanctuary in the year 1955. The park came under the Project Tiger in 1979 and became a National Park in 1982. The main fauna in the park includes the Tiger, Panther, Hyena, Jungle Cat, Civet, Sambhar, Chinkara, Nilgai and Four-Horned Antelope. The other great predator of Sariska's forests is the leopard besides the ferocious tiger. Sariska has a healthy porcupine population, and this tiny creature often pits itself against the tiger, which is particularly fond of porcupine flesh. The birdlife comprises of the Pea Fowl, Gray Partridge, Quail, Sandgrouse, Tree Pie, White-Breasted Kingfisher, Golden-Backed Woodpecker, Crested Serpent, Eagle and Great Indian Horned Owl.
The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in history as well. The ruins of medieval Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva is found within the park. The ruins of the 10th century AD temple Garh-Rajor are scattered all over the forest. You can have a panoramic view of the birds of Sariska in flight from the 17th century AD castle set on a sharp hilltop at Kanakwari. A palace built by the erstwhile Maharajas of Alwar has now been converted into a heritage hotel.
Besides the Palace, you could visit the Kankwari Fort on your tour inside the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. Historically, this fort has its own tale as Emperor Aurangazeb had imprisoned his brother Dara Sikoh here.
The best way to tour the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is by jeep. If you are adventurous in nature, you could also book a 'hide', overlooking one of the waterholes. All you need is to pick up your sleeping bag and some food and settle down to watch.
