Ranthanbore was the hunting ground of the Maharaja of Jaipur. In 1955, it was declared a game sanctuary and it was only in 1980, that it became a national park. The Ranthambore Park is set between the Aravalli and Vindhya ranges. The reserve is situated 14 km from Sawai Madhopur. Its deciduous forests were once a part of the magnificent jungles of Central India. The terrain is rugged and there are rocky ridges, hills and open valleys with lakes and pools. Set between the Aravalli and Vindhya ranges, its deciduous forests were a part of the magnificent dense jungles of central India.
Ranthambore is a heritage site because of the picturesque ruins that dot the park. There are lake palaces, chhatris, old fortifications and a majestic 1,000-year-old fort overlooking the park. The lovely Jogi Mahal is located at the foot of the fort. Three big lakes - Padam Talab (meaning Lake), Malik Talab and Raj Bagh - are similar turquoises studded in the vast forest that abounds with aquatic vegetation including duckweeds, lilies and lotus.
The park is famous for tigers and due to conservation efforts, the tiger population has stabilized if not increased here. The tigers can be spotted quite often even during the day, at their normal pursuits-- hunting and taking care of their young ones. Ranthambore is one of the best places to see these majestic predators.
There are many stores in Sawai Madhopur that offer arts and crafts to tourists. Make sure you carry back memories of your vacation in the wilds. You can buy T-shirts, postcards, posters and greeting cards with images of tigers and other wild animals and birds of Ranthambore. Locally made textiles, clothing decorated with traditional embroidery and mirrors and Rajasthani turbans, puppets and other handicraft items make interesting souvenirs to take back after your tour to Ranthambore and the tourist attractions near Ranthambore National Park.
