Amidst the golden sand dunes, ambling camels and thorny vegetation of Thar Desert towers a fort, 120 meters above the plain. The fort overlooks the imperial city of Jodhpur, which is a part of the Desert Tourist Triangle. A 10 km long wall surrounds the old Jodhpur city with eight gates serving as entrances. The new city is settled around this walled area. This city was on the silk route of the 16th century and hence was host to a number of travelers.
In Jodhpur, the genius of its sculptors comes to life in its exquisite palaces, forts, temples and Havelis, which stand testimony to the imperial grandeur. The most alluring part of Jodhpur is the traditional lifestyle, festivity and the smiling people who treasure this former princely state.
On your vacation to Jodhpur, you must watch out for its beautiful palaces and forts. The Umaid Bhavan Palace is one of the world's biggest palaces built in the twentieth century. This sand stone façade building, now houses the erstwhile ruler of Jodhpur, a Five Star Deluxe Hotel and a Museum. It is an ideal venue to relive the majesty of the royalty while on a vacation to Jodhpur.
One of the most impregnable forts in India, the majestic Mehrangarh Fort is also in Jodhpur. The fort contains within its area some of the most beautiful palaces with wonderfully carved panels, latticed windows and evocative names. Noteworthy of these are the Phool Mahal, the Moti Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal, the Daulat Khana and the Sileh Khana. One has to cross seven gates in order to enter the fort.
Jaswant Thada, should be another destination on your trip to Jodhpur. Made out of white marble, this monument is dedicated to Maharaja Jaswant Singh.
