Situated as the border town on the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer stands beckoning travelers to its enchanting land, full of fable, color and history. Founded by Prince Jaisala in 1156, the city has a historical importance. Jaisalmer was the seat of many battles between the indigenous ruling regimes and the central authority of that period, Mughals. Jaisalmer was also of commercial significance as it served as a strategic trading point across the Thar.
One of the most important attractions in Jaisalmer is the Fort of Jaisalmer, also known as Sonar Quila. This architectural wonder dominates the entire town. It is located on Trikuta Hill', 76 m above the town and can be seen from a distance of 15 km. The fort can be approached from four gateways-: Akhaiyal, Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol and Hava Pol. Inside the fort there are narrow lanes and some lovely Havelis. Today, the fort of Jaisalmer enjoys the reputation of being the only fort on the earth that houses one quarter of old city's population.
Owing to its strategic position on the camel track route, Jaisalmer was home to a number of wealthy merchants in the past. The affluent traders are gone and what are left are intricately latticed havelis and mansions. An ideal vacation in Jaisalmer would be incomplete without tour to Patwon-ki-Haveli, a five-storied haveli that has carved pillars, extensive corridors and chambers.
While in Jaisalmer, it is difficult to resist the charm of a camel safari, the most interesting way to explore the desert around. Most safaris last for three to four days, and often pass through millet fields, small hamlets and interesting ruins. At night, the caravan stops and you camp out in tents under the star-spangled sky. The usual circuit can include a trip to the Sam Sand Dunes and Bada Bagh and Chatris, two quite contradictory places. Located at a distance of 42 km from Jaisalmer, the Sam Sand Dunes, is the closest point to witness the total sandy desert. It is a great place to see patterns carved out by winds on the sand. Sam has a truly magnificent stretch of sweeping dunes, with little or no vegetation. The Bada Bagh and Chatris 6 km away from Jaisalmer is a fertile oasis on the bank of an artificial lake. Much of the city's fruits and vegetables are grown here. Surrounded by dense trees are the royal cenotaphs with beautifully carved ceilings and equestrian statues of the former rulers.
