The very spirit of Chittorgarh epitomizes the pride, romance and spirit of the Rajputs. The city of Chittorgarh echoes tales of heroism and sacrifice to every traveler. Chittorgarh is the legendary site of three mass suicides (jauhar) of the Rajput females in 1303, 1535 and 1568. It epitomizes courage and self-respect of the valiant defenders in the Hindu resistance against the Mughal invaders.
The main reason for touring in Chittorgarh is its massive hilltop fort, which is a depiction of Rajput culture and values. The fort stands on a 240-hectares site on an 180m high hill. Among the monuments housed within the fort are Rana Kumbha Palace, Fateh Prakash Palace, Tower of Victory and Padmini's Palace.
The Tower of Victory or Vijay Stambh should be the next stop. Maharana Kumbha built this 9-storyed 'tower of Victory' in 1440.AD to commemorate his victory over Mohammed Khilji of Malwa. From the top of the tower, you can have a beautiful view of the whole town. The tower gets illuminated in the evening, which casts a kind of magical spell. A piece de resistance, the tower is a must see on your vacation itinerary to Rajasthan.
Chittorgarh is also a religious site to the Jains. The town has one of the finest Jain structures in the country, the Kirti Stambh. Dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankar, the Kirti Stambh was built in the 12th century A.D., by a wealthy Jain merchant. The tower is adorned with figures of Digambars.
