Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

Also known as the Keoladeo National Park, the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary welcomes more than 415 species of birds every year. Most of the parks of the ancient times were developed from the hunting preserves of the princes. But this bird sanctuary is unique since it was the only animal house created by a king (Maharaja) for hunting. Keoladeo is an ancient Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva situated in the center of this park and Ghana means dense, which are in context to the thick area forests that covers this area.

A bicycle is an exciting mode of transport inside the park. The sanctuary is popular for its avian guests that come from Siberia and it is a treat to watch these birds. But Bharatpur teems with a large number of birds throughout the year and you can watch at least 150 species of birds in a single day. Some of the birds that you may see in the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary include Greater and Indian spotted Eagles, Indian Courser, Imperial, Dalmatian Pelicans, Solitary Lapwing, Dusky Eagle Owls, Demoiselle Cranes and Sarus. October to February is considered to be the best season for visiting the sanctuary.

Besides some serious bird watching, some of the important landmarks in Bharatpur that you can tour include Lohagarh Fort. This massive iron structure built in the early 18th century. With its impregnable defenses it sustained itself even after a number of British attacks. The fort was conceived and designed by Maharaja Suraj Mal, the founder of Bharatpur. The fort has three palaces within its precincts - Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas. A few of the eight imposing towers still stand erect within the glorious ramparts of the Fort. Especially two of them - Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj are of special interest.

You also make a trip to the Palace. This royal edifice is a fusion of the Mughal and Rajput architectural styles with magnificent apartments and intricately designed floor tiles having interesting patterns.

A rich collection of artifacts, exquisitely carved sculptures and ancient inscriptions can be admired in the Government Museum located in the Palaces. All these items speak volumes about the rich heritage, art and crafts of the region.
