The city of Mumbai formerly Bombay owes its name to the stone goddess Mumbadevi, worshipped by the Kolis, who are the original inhabitants of this city. Made up of a collection of seven islands, Mumbai is the hub of the Indian financial and corporate sectors. Synonymous with "Bollywood", it has earned itself the reputation of being the "city where dreams come true". Considered as the "Mecca of Stardom", every year people flock to this city with the hopes of becoming the next big movie star. Mumbai provides the corporate visitor as well as the holidaying tourist the right ambience and all the accompanying facilities, to make a visit they will always cherish.
Mumbai-Bombay manifests a strong Western streak amidst the traditional Maharashtrian milieu. This is probably due to its being literally the Gateway of India, the point of arrival for most visitors from the West. The Gateway of India was built in 1919 and opened to public in 1924. The ceremonial arch was built in 1927 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary for the Delhi Durbar in 1911. Historically, the gateway holds greater significance as the last of the British troops left Independent India by sea and marched through its portals.
Marine Drive, Mumbai's distinctive curving seafront avenue connects the skyscrapers of Nariman Point to the green villas of Malabar Hill. It is also known as the Queen's Necklace because of it appearance after sunset.
Situated out in the Arabian Sea, The Elephanta Island is a must visit. The island has a rock-cut Shiva Temple on top of a hill. The island is accessible only through a ferry.
Another destination that you cannot miss is the mosque in the middle of the sea. This mosque is located in the causeway protruding into the Arabian Sea. The white mosque is the tomb of Saint Haji Ali. Haji Ali was a wealthy Muslim who renounced the world and proceeded to Mecca. It is said that he died in Mecca and the casket miraculously drifted and came to the spot where the mosque is built toady. The mosque can only be approached during low tide.
