Bharatpur is known all over the world as the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. It is also called as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. It is perched between the two historic cities, Agra and Jaipur. Situated in the state of Rajasthan, it is about 190 km from Delhi. The name Sanctuary derived from two words 'Keoladeo' and 'Ghana'. Keoladeo is the ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the sanctuary's central zone while the term 'Ghana' means dense and thick in Hindi.
The Maharaja of Bharatpur is created it in 1890 by enclosing a large area with embankments. The area was further divided into earthen dams called 'bunds' thereby creating a large number of marshes and lakes. Dr. Salim Ali initiated the conservation efforts in the park. The area was demarked as a national park in March 1982. In 1985, Keoladeo national Park was made the UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
